What Is a Shiva Platter?
Shiva is the seven-day mourning period in Jewish tradition. During shiva, the family of the deceased stays home, and the community visits to bring comfort and food. The food served is typically simple, easy to serve, easy to eat, classic deli fare: bagels, smoked fish, cold cuts, salads, baked goods. The "shiva platter" is the catering version of this spread.
How Many People Will You Need to Feed?
This is the question we get most often, and the honest answer is: usually more than you think. A shiva typically draws between 15 and 50 people across the seven days, with the largest crowd on the first two or three days. Our rule of thumb:
- Immediate family only (10β15 people): Order our standard shiva platter for 12.
- Family + close friends (20β25 people): Order our medium spread plus extra bagels.
- Large gathering (40+ people): Order our full spread with hot brisket and extra salads.
It's always better to over-order slightly. Leftovers can be packed up for the family to eat over the following days. Running out, especially at a shiva, is the opposite of what you want.
When Should You Call?
Same-day delivery is usually possible if you call us before noon. For larger spreads (40+ people), we appreciate 24 hours notice if possible, but we understand that shiva timing is not always something you can plan around. Just call. We'll figure it out.
